MLS Cup in Seattle

I spent about 32 hours in the car with friends on a road trip to Seattle for the 2009 MLS Cup.
It was a sweet bonus that my team, Real Salt Lake, was in the match. Even more sweet when they won.
Beating the LA Galaxy and David Beckham and effectively forcing the ESPN commentators to acknowledge that there was an entire other team in the game, took sweet to whole new level of sugary goodness!
I have been on cloud 9 with no voice for nearly 2 days.

Crescent Valley House Fire

I was driving home today and saw a cloud of black smoke rising on the horizon (see the last photo) so I stopped to have a look.

There was a mobile home on fire well into a burn. I grabbed my camera and started shooting.
I wanted close up action shots but only had a short lens. Not to worry... I just sidled on up and started shooting.

I guess I got a little too close (see first photo) because after a few shots, almost over the firemen's shoulders, a firefighter, quickly but politely ushered me off to a safe distance.

Skies Adrift

One thing Northern Nevada is not short on is dramatic skies.
This scene was near Beowawe (pronounced bay-o-WAH-wee) Nevada. It is listed as a ghost town on GhostTowns.com but you would not know it to drive through it. There are still residents in the town and it has a library and Fire Station that are still operating..
The GT site also says it is "not worth the trip" as far as ghost towns are concerned but I think that may be a tad harsh considering some of the ghost towns I have visited.
If I can see sites like this every time I go I would be tempted to change the entry to "Worth the trip if you go after a storm".

The 11th Day of the 11th Month

The eleventh day of the eleventh month means many things to many people.
In the United States November 11th is Veterans Day, it is the day to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice.
While in America we honor the living veterans, the rest of the world honor the fallen. In many countries today is Remembrance Day or Armistice Day. (In Poland and Angola it is Independence Day)
The 11th of November marks the end of World War I.
On the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month, the guns fell silent.
